<intro>

Cavaliers forward LeBron James missed his second straight game Monday due to a rolled right ankle and some discomfort in his back. Despite also being without Antawn Jamison for most of the second half due to a sore knee, the Cavs were able to outduel the Spurs and win 97-95 at home.

James was supposedly given the day off Saturday against the Bucks in order to rest from playing so many minutes lately. But now that he missed his second straight game, many assume that the night off indeed had to do with the rolled ankle he suffered Friday against Detroit.

The Spurs were once again without point guard Tony Parker, who will miss about six more weeks with a broken hand he suffered Saturday against the Grizzlies.

Jamison, the Cavs' big prize landed before the deadline from Washington, said that his knee stiffened up. He is set to undergo an MRI on Tuesday. He had 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting before exiting.

The Cavs have three days off before facing the 76ers at home on Friday.

    <intro>

LeBron James sat out Saturday night's 92-85 loss to the Bucks due to a coach's decision made by Mike Brown.

Some assumed that James didn't play because he rolled his right ankle in Friday's game against Detroit, but Brown insists that the day off was given because of the number of minutes James had played in recent games.

The Bucks took advantage of James's absence and went on to win their 15th game out of their last 19 overall. The Cavs struggled out of the gate without their superstar, posting just 14 points in the opening quarter.

Milwaukee's starting five combined for 78 points. Conversely, only Antawn Jamison could get going for the Cavs, putting up 30 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. The rest of the Cavs' starters combined for just 19 points. Guard Delonte West came off the bench to score a season-high 27 points.

James had played in all 63 games this season prior to Saturday. He continues to lead the league in scoring at 30.0 points per contest.

James said early in the season that he would be willing to give up his No. 23 in an attempt to have the league retire it in honor of Michael Jordan, and he is making good on his promise.

He is not the first superstar to change his numbers during his career. Oddly enough, the person he is changing his number for, Michael Jordan, briefly wore No. 45 after coming out of retirement with the Bulls prior to the teams’ second three-peat, and most recently, Kobe Bryant of the Lakers switched from No. 8 to No. 24.

    <intro>
Cleveland Cavaliers center Shaquille O'Neal will have surgery to repair a right thumb sprain and will likely miss the remainder or the season, according to the team.

The Cavaliers announced that O'Neal will undergo surgery in Baltimore on Monday. While the team has not a given a timetable for his recovery, the Cleveland Plain Dealer has reported that similar injuries that lead to surgery normally require six to eight weeks to heal. There are only seven more weeks in the NBA season.

The surgery will be performed by Dr. Thomas Graham at the National Hand Center in Baltimore.

O'Neal injured the thumb in Thursday's game against the Celtics, when Glen Davis hit his hand while he was getting off a shot. Davis could be seen on replays pulling on O'Neal's thumb while defending the center.

O'Neal is averaging 12 points and 6.7 rebounds in 53 games with the Cavaliers this season.
</intro>

    <intro>
With the All-Star break just around the corner, the NBA grind is over halfway completed.

Steam-rolling through the vast majority of the league, the Cavs are sitting pretty at 41-11. They are currently 22-3 at home and have ripped off 11 W’s in a row. They are rolling even without the services of two of the most important guards on the team: Delonte West and Mo Williams.

LeBron James has been…well he has been LeBron James. His second straight MVP award might be on the way as he has dominated to the tune of 29.8 PPG, just over seven rebounds and eight assists to go along with a career high in shooting percentage (50.4 percent) this season.

Daniel “Boobie” Gibson has filled in for the injured guards averaging over 12 points a game in the last eight games. He has taken over the offense and is looking like the 2007 playoffs version of himself.

Back then I thought he was destined for stardom as he hit big shot after big shot as the Cavs made it to their only ever NBA Finals appearance. Considering he’s only 23, he can be a big piece of the Cavs offense for not only this year but for the foreseeable future.

One guy that is not in the Cavs future plans is the “Big Aristotle,” or “Shaqtus,” or “Big Witness Protection,” Shaquille O’Neal.

He is averaging just a shade under 12 points and seven rebounds a game and is starting to finally feel comfortable in his new 23 minutes a night role. He is getting easy buckets off the pick-in-roll with LeBron and has held his own on the defensive end.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas has been with the team longer than any other player and he hasn’t created chemistry problems in the locker room due to his new role of coming off the bench and receiving less playing time. Now, he is some sort of a three-point specialist.

J.J Hickson is not making the offensive jump many expected from him this year. Scoring 7.2 points a game is underwhelming and he needs to show more if he expects to play key minutes in the playoffs.

The new guys Anthony Parker and Jamario Moon don’t do a whole lot for me or the Cavs. They are role players for a fourth of fifth-seeded team, but not the Cavs with their championship aspirations. Their contributions are minimal and certainly not vital for the Cavs to succeed.

So, just like last year, the Cavs are dominating yet are still missing something. This team added a 37-year-old Shaq to the playoff mix. Will he really be able to control the wild beast also known as Dwight Howard?

Can the much younger Cavs play smart enough to win in a seven game series against the heady cast of players in Boston? And what about the Hawks, whom have some terrific one-on-one scorers that get it done in crunch-time.

And these are just the hurdles in the Eastern Conference!

I don’t trust Mo Williams in the crunch time. Ditto for Moon and Parker. Shaq can’t play in close games due to his wonderfully awful free throw shooting. So what is going to happen when LeBron is double teamed and forced to pass? Hmmm, sounds like the same problem the Cavs had last year.

They need to unload Moon or Hickson and a guard to swoop in to steal a guy that is on the trading block because of financial reasons. Chris Bosh and Amare Stoudemire might be too much, but what about Caron Butler?

A proven crunch-time scorer that plays excellent defense as well. Or how about the Wizards’ other All-Star forward Antwan Jamison? He is a 20 point a game guy that has hit big time shots in the past. Each player can be had for less than their value as the Wizards cut their losses on a disastrous season.

Or what about Kevin Martin of the Kings. One of the league’s leading scorers lost his spot when he went out with an injury and super rookie Tyreke Evans took over. Andre Iguodala is available, as is Marcus Camby. Richard Jefferson hasn’t worked out for the Spurs and is looking for a trade. There are lots of options for the Cavs and what player doesn’t want to play with LeBron?

Last year, the Cavs thought they had enough to win a championship with the team they had and we all know how that worked out. The Cavs need another bona fide All-Star (sorry Mo—you aren’t) that wasn’t in the league when teams still wore short-shorts (sorry, Shaq).

This year, it’s the same exact situation. Don’t repeat history, Cleveland—this city has already been tortured enough. Find a guy that spreads the floor, plays strong post D, and can make a shot in the clutch. Who knows…maybe this year affects the next 10-plus years of the franchise. No pressure, Dan Gilbert!
</intro>

    <intro>
Citing concerns over the swine flu, the Cleveland Cavaliers have removed all of the water fountains from Quicken Loans Arena to reduce the spread of bacteria and communicable disease.

"This was done in an effort to foster the most health-safe environment we felt we could provide for our fans," said Cavaliers team spokesman Tad Carper. He said that he is not aware of any other NBA team that has removed water fountains from their arenas. Carper said the team has also significantly increased its cleaning and sanitation procedures throughout the arena in light of what he called the "national health landscape."

Carper said the decision was based on information from several qualified sources, although he did not specify who those sources were. Removing the water fountains was not an attempt to force fans to buy bottled water Carper said. Fans who want a drink of water can now get a 9-ounce cup for free at a concession stand or pay $4 for bottled water.

The team did not consult the city's health department, which does not recommend removing water fountains as a health precaution, said department director Matt Carroll. "I haven't been able to find anything in the whole H1N1 [swine flu] world that says water fountains are a concern," Carroll said.

A message seeking comment from the NBA on Monday was not returned.
</intro>

James scored 22 points, but concentrated on running the Cleveland offense in the absence of guards Mo Williams and Delonte West. It was the fifth time in six games that James has had at least 10 assists. James didn't even attempt his first shot until 4:52 remained in the first quarter.

Rudy Gay scored 15 for Memphis, playing its fourth game in five nights. Zach Randolph added 8 points on 3 of 14 shooting and O.J. Mayo had 10 on 4 of 15 shooting. The Grizzlies were coming off a two-point home win over the Los Angeles Lakers, but they couldn't run with the Cavaliers. Cleveland leads the NBA with a 39-11 record and improved to 10-0 against Western Conference teams at home this season.
<intro>
The Cavs are approaching halftime of what is their 50th game this season. LeBron just swooped into the lane and completed a three-point play, the old-fashioned way. And smothering D has given the Cavs a sizable lead thus far. Assuming the Cavs maintain this 18-point lead, at home, against a tired-looking Grizz team coming in on the second night of a back to back where they edged out the Lake Show.

The Shaq experiment got off to a slow start, but over the last two weeks has picked up and proven to be a well-needed acquisition. Anthony Parker has been a solid contributor at both ends. Anderson Varejao has evolved from a floppy foreign faux defender into a legitimate, cerebral defender. Bench warmers J.J. Hickson and Jawad Williams from last season have also come along to be key contributors this year. Oh yeah, and that Bron guy is looking to repeat at MVP, straight into the 2020's.

So as the Cavs head into the All-Star break and the trade deadline looms over the league as the first step towards the championship, the question comes up, what do the Cavs need to do to get better?

I submit to you what I said last year... absolutely nothing.

While last season did not fare like the Cavs were hoping, they ran into a buzzsaw last year in the Orlando Magic. The Magic were the one team which I believe could beat the Cavs and did just that through mismatches at nearly each position and an outside shooting team which caught serious fire at the perfect time. It seemed through all six games every Magic player could not miss. And is there any coincidence that overrated Rashard Lewis played lights out, stole Game 1 from the Cavs (which turned out to be the series decider right there, as the Cavs could not pose a threat on the road), was suspended ten games to start this season and has not returned to form all season?

Anyways, this year, as I have been saying this whole season is the: Celtics are overrated, old, and are on the downslide; Orlando misses Hedo Turkoglu more than anyone besides me though since the beauty of their team last year was their length; Atlanta is rising, but not at the Cavs level; and the rest of the West is quickly catching up with the Lakers, who still are not tough, but a finesse team (even with Ron Artest) as the Cavs have man-handled them in two viewings this season.

Right now, even despite the Cavs now nine game winning streak, they have yet to peak as a team. During this current streak, LeBron has elevated his game to Magic/Jordan/Robertson levels with former benchwarmers Hickson, Jawad Williams, and Daniel Gibson. He is establishing his inside game, polishing his defense on all levels and hitting from long-range at a greater efficiency than ever before. They are up a game over the Lakers now for best overall record (again) and are 5 1/2 games over the Magic, sitting at the second seed in the east. And this year's record is not as inflated as last year's, as the Cavs are beating teams over .500 percentage at a high clip, especially championship contenders.

Especially during this streak also, we are seeing the emergence of Shaq as the dominant center again as he is a double-double enforcer inside the paint which could be the ultimate difference maker.

Remember, this year's Cavs team is rolling currently without two starters from last year's 66-win team, Mo Williams and Delonte West. Before Delonte went down, he was hitting his stride filling in for Mo for a game and coming off the bench as an energy guy with toughness down the stretch. Mo was playing well too. And the Cavs have cleaned up the messy turnovers which have plagued their season before this streak.

And to top it all off, Cavs faithful have yet to see Leon Powe, an inside presence who can get a double-double in 20 minutes a game on sheer determination alone. And he has championship experience with the Celtics from a few years ago.

Once the Cavs get these three guys back into the fold, they essentially have proven talent to be 12-deep throughout the playoffs once those three guys are back. As the future bench warmers get significant experience now and prove themselves, once these three injured players come back, surely to make a difference down the stretch and into the second season, the Cavs have no need for any of these rumored trades.

Now, this talk about the Cavs lacking a "Stretch 4" type player — such as a Rashard Lewis or Antawn Jamison. These players are lacking around the league, since all of the sudden in the last handful of years their market value has skyrocketed. But once again, I submit to you, while it may be nice for the Cavs to see Jamison (who may be the most available player the Cavs would like to see come into town) or someone else of his stature lace em up, the Cavs have this player in LeBron, who is a freak able to play four positions, maybe even center in some cases.

(Other players like Amare are not needed either. The Cavs do not need to worry about salary dumps, like others since Gilbert has proven he is willing to spend, and win. The Cavs need to focus on the players they have now, block out silly trade rumors by faux commentators at ESPN and elsewhere, who are actually nothing more than fantasy league players, not real analysts of the game and other "video game players" who just want to see All-Star teams, not real teams, and take care of business now.)

The beautiful thing about the Cavs this year is they have been able to play many different styles of basketball; small ball, multiple 7-footers, or five guys on the floor over 6-8 at once. This Cavs team, despite missing this suddenly crucial piece (slightly sarcastic) of the desired Stretch 4, are more versatile than ever before, which is also more versatile and dynamic than any team in the league. Tall, finesse team like the Lakers, there's a CAV for that. Small and quick opponent, there's a CAV for that too. They can back you down, shoot over you, outshoot you, dribble penetrate, fast break, work the shot clock, and work the triangle through Shaq. Oh, and they play amazing team defense as well, which is still key come playoff time.

Many things which were questions marks coming into this year — the Shaq experiment, Delonte's legal and personal problems, LeBron free agent speculation, bench production, and role players showing up in prime time like Mo — have all turned into positives for this team and have not been the distractions many national pundits predicted. Plus, with a favorably easy second half schedule, the Cavs have positioned themselves perfectly for a championship run towards the O'Brien trophy and a parade through downtown Cleveland, finally.

All the Cavs need to do now is continue to follow LeBron's royal example, get healthy, and not let the spotlight get to them. Let the other teams lower on the ladder than they are scramble for missing pieces which do not exist, as many acquisitions have not worked anyways from the offseason anyways (remember the Rasheed Wallace, Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson pickups? Me neither, all of which I knew would not work as "experts" were predicting). This season is in the Cavs' control. Let's hope they don't fissel out at the end, as they have been known to do in the past in games they lose interest in against weaker competition.
</intro>

    <intro>
Well, it's about that time of the year in the NBA. With less than a month to go before the trading deadline the rumors are swirling. Under performing teams are looking to dump huge salaries as they prepare room in their budgets for next years free agent crop.

In the NBA, the trading rules are very complex. For instance, if the teams are over the salary cap, the current year salaries of the players involved in any trade must be within 15% plus $100,000 of each other. So, teams with high priced player(s) with multi year contracts will trade them to willing participants in exchange for high priced players whose contacts will expire at the end of the year, thus freeing up cap space for next season.

Enter Zydrunas. It has been speculated that the lowly Washington Wizards would love to dump the salaries of both guard Gilbert Arenas and forward Antawn Jamison. Arenas is more likely to find a jail cell before he finds another team so the focus has been on Jamison.

Rumors have surfaced that the Cavaliers covet the the high scoring Jamison. The Cavs love the offensive the 6'9" forward would provide both inside and out, along with the length he would provide defensively against larger opponents on the perimeter. The Cavs fell short in that department last year in the playoffs when the Orlando Magic's Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis and Mikael Pietrus torched them continually from 3 point range.

Ilgauskus' large salary expires at the end of the year making him the prime trade bait in any Cavalier trade. Tough spot for the Cavs. "Z" is the senior member of the whole organization and has been here through the good times and bad. He worked hard to battle through several surgeries that would have ended many players careers and has played a huge part in the teams resurgence. Add to that, he is not only a fan favorite but a LeBron favorite. The King has even stated that he wants to win one for the big guy.

So when you stop to add it all up, a trade of "Z" on the cusp of a possible NBA championship could make for some bad karma. So I ask you, would a ring without "Z" taste as sweet?

    <intro>
Dwayne Wade and LeBron James on the same team in 2010 is a long shot. But it's not out of the question.

Can two mega-stars in their prime ever coexist? Can their egos be set aside?

Wade recently made some very intriguing comments to the New York Post regarding his free agency after the season:

"Before we agreed to terms, LeBron and I had a couple conversations," Wade said. "I can't recall exactly what we said, but the gist of it was we wanted to give ourselves the flexibility and the option to play together."

The two played together in the 2008 Olympics so they have experience playing together. The two most successful players from the 2003 draft have developed a friendly relationship over the years.

The only way this would work is if the dynamic-duo would take a significant pay cut. Nobody expects pro athletes to do that. There's going to be a white Christmas in Hawaii before a athlete surrenders some of his money.

But Wade says that is not necessarily the case:

"A lot of times in this league, players usually wind up going where they can get the most money. We're both blessed within that area. We've made a lot of money. So we wanted to base our decision on two things, the organization and the ability to win a title. And that's what we'll do. When the season is over, we plan to sit down and talk about it."

This is great news for New York Knick fans. The franchise might be able to pull off something this outrageous. James and Wade can make up the lost salary with all the endorsements deals they can handle.

"I'm not saying it will happen. But I'm intrigued by the idea."

How much money can a franchise make off the star power of combing those two? How many new fans can they attach with a combo like that?

I'm quivering at the mere thought. This is going to be quite the summer for the NBA.
</intro>

    <intro>
In the Cav’s 99-89 win over the New Jersey Nets on Tuesday night at Quicken Loans Arena, it almost seemed as if they were just toying with the team with the worst record in the NBA at 2-23.

This was the type of game that the Cavs, who are leading their division with an 18-6 record, should have been in a total “ in your face mode” and downright dominated the game.

However, with 4:09 left in the third quarter, the Cavs had seen their 15 point lead trimmed down to just 2 points and the game was no longer the type of “breeze” game that everyone expected it to be. The game was no longer a “fun” game and it was time to get down to business and scratch and claw out a victory.

Not the type of game any NBA fan would have expected between these two teams.

''It's something we have to continue to try to figure out,'' Cleveland coach Mike Brown said. ''Out of our seven losses, five came against sub .500 teams. Maybe . . hopefully in time, no matter who we're facing, we'll go out and do what we need to do to get the win and play at a consistent level throughout most of the game.''

Unsurprisingly, LeBron James led all scorers in the game with 23 points, six rebounds and seven assists. Centers Shaquille O'Neal and Zydrunas Ilgauskas combined for 32 points and 10 rebounds and the Cavs produced a balanced offensive effort and had nine men contribute offensively and basically did what was expected and dominated the game.

''When you can get that type of play out of your two bigs, it means a lot,'' LaBron said of O'Neal and Ilgauskas.

The Cavs made 58 percent of their shots, but the Nets stayed in the game by going to the free throw line 29 times in the game.

IN commenting of the amount of times the Nets went to the line, Brown said it's a matter of the Cavs trying to figure out when officials are going to make calls.

''We sent them to the free-throw line quite a bit,'' Brown said. ''We have to get in a better rhythm and figure out what's going to be called and what's not going to be called.''

It seemed as if the Cavs were taking this game for granted and it took LaBron James to take over the game late in the third quarter for the Cavs to snap out of it and produce enough energy to win the game. LaBron scored seven consecutive points in a 9-2 run that gave the Cavs a 72-63 lead and the push they needed going into the fourth quarter.

It wasn't until 3:48 of the fourth quarter that the real fireworks began despite the Cavs holding a comfortable 92-79 lead.

At that point of the game, the Nets did not mount a serious run, and the Cavs built their lead to as many as 13 points. But the fact that they made the Cavs work and that it was not an easy game throughout was not a surprise to LaBron.

''They're an NBA team,'' LaBron said ''It's not who plays who better, it's who gets a win. Every game is its own. You can't go into a game saying this team only has two wins, that's where you get bit.''
</intro>

    <intro>
Let me clear this up right away...LeBron James is the second best player in the NBA behind Kobe Bryant. He can get to the rim at will and has improved his defense tremendously since entering the league. He is the face of the NBA and is a model citizen off the court.

But his actions since last May are becoming too hard to ignore. He has gotten a free pass from the media since he was in high school and the man can get away with things that essentially every other player can't.

This all started back in May after the Conference Finals.

He attempted to single handily beat the Magic and when he came up short he refused to shake hands with the victors. He stormed off and even left his demoralized teammates out to dry as James skipped out on the post-game press conference as well. Most people looked at this as if he was the ultimate competitor or he just hates losing so much so they rationalized.

Who likes losing? Of course most players don't want to deal with that crap after getting beat but they do, because they are professionals. LeBron acted liked an amateur.

This summer James sat back and let rumors about his impending 2010 free agency swirl . He didn't make a single comment on the situation and left Cavs fans sweating bullets in full on paranoia mode. That's not what I have a problem with.

When the Cavs invaded Madison Square Garden last month James looked like a foster kid that just met his real dad.

He was engaged with the crowd and with all the famous celebrities sitting court-side and even wore shoes that had NYC written on them. After the game there was a line of famous people waiting on him to talk. Jay-Z, A-Rod, C.C. Sabathia, and Mark Texeria were all there giving him the New York pitch.

And just last week he was doing a dance on the sideline during a blow-out win against the Chicago Bulls. IT WAS DURING LIVE ACTION. I've never even heard of anything like that before. Where is the professionalism and respect for the game at?

All the above is off the court stuff. On the court he has created a unique situation. He is the most exciting player in the NBA, so you would think he is on a must-see team. The reality is that the Cavs have turned into quite possibly the most boring team in the league and the hardest to watch.

Time and time again four Cavs are spectators as LeBron sits on the ball waiting to breakdown an opponent one-on-one. The offensive game-plan for the Cavs seemingly has two plays: High pick for LeBron with Shaq or Z, and a curl screen for Delonte West or Mo Williams.

Tuesday night's game against the Memphis Grizzles was a perfect example. He held the ball for 15-20 seconds of the shot clock before launching a three or barreling down the lane making the officials blow the whistle. The Grizz figured this out and Rudy Gay was able to get a few crunch time steals because of it.

On the final possession in regulation James sat at the top of the key for a good 15 seconds with no movement at all by the other four Cavs. Finally with about five seconds left on the shot clock he lowered his shoulder and barreled down the lane drawing the foul and sending the game into OT.

James has gotten into the habit of using his brute strength to punish the defender. He doesn't give them a chance to move their feet and attempt to play solid D. He knows the refs give him the benefit of the doubt and he takes advantage of a ton, especially in the last two minutes of games.

He tried to do the same in OT but this time the Grizz were able to avoid his initiated contact and force him into a bad shot. Then his shot to win the game resulted in a extremely tough fad-away that didn't have a prayer.

Sure he had 43 points and 13 boards, but why did he shoot 13 three's?

James is taking the city of Cleveland for a roller coaster ride of emotions and he seemingly enjoys doing it. He asked reporters to stop asking him about his free agency saying its getting old. What's getting old is the way he continually shoves his other options directly into the face of Cavalier ownership.

James needs to spend next summer with Kobe and learn from him. He needs to develop a post up game so he can stop running over people while taking a beating in the process. He needs to stop taking so many three-pointers and fade-aways.

James hasn't improved his game since the improbable run to the 2007 NBA Finals against the Spurs. It seems that he is comfortable with his current averages of 28 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Amazing numbers for sure.

But he is capable of more. He was touted as the next MJ but that killer instinct isn't there.

The straight out of high school star has become complacent with his current position. But will the team that he plays for next year feel the same way after dropping hundred's of millions of dollars on him? Who knows...
</intro>

    <intro>
The Cleveland Cavaliers enter the 2009-2010 season in search of the city's first pro sports championship since 1999 when the Cleveland Crunch won the NPSL Indoor Soccer League Title.

     With the summer of 2010 looming in front of them, and the sting of the playoff loss to the Magic still lingering, the Cavs made some nice off season moves to try and get over the top. The biggest move was acquiring Shaquille O'Neal form the Phoenix Suns for underachieving Sasha Pavlovic, aging Ben Wallace, and cash. O'Neal, who was relatively healthy last year, averaged 17.8 ppg, 8.4 rpg, and 1.4 bpg for the Suns.

If O'Neal can match those or be close to those numbers this year the Cavs will be ecstatic. The Cavs also brought in some veterans in the persons of Anthony Parker(10.7 ppg, 4.0 rpg, and 2.4 apg) for Toronto last season. they also added Jamario Moon(7.2 ppg, and 4.6 rpg) for Toronto and Miami last season, and Leon Powe who spent last season with the Celtics and averaged 7.7 pg and 4.9 rpg. These veterans should add some leadership and be a positive presence off the bench.

     The rest of the team should be familiar with Mo Williams(17.8 ppg, 4.6 apg) running the point, Delonte West(11.7 ppg, 3.5 apg) at shooting guard, assuming he overcomes his personal issues. Power forward will be manned by Anderson Varejao(8.6 ppg, and 7.0 rpg), and of course LeBron James(28.4 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 7.2 apg) at small forward. Shaquille O'Neal will of course be manning center. Bench will include the aforementioned Parker, Moon, and Powe along with Zydrunas Illgauskas(12.9 ppg, 7.5 rpg), Daniel Gibson(7.8 ppg, 1.7 apg), and J.J. Hickson(4.0 ppg, and 2.7 rpg).

     If Shaq can deliver a relatively healthy season, and the rest of the team improve their games the Cavs will be right there once again come playoff time.
</intro>

    <intro>
Here are the schedules for the first week of the season for mty top three picks to make the NBA Finals.

The Cavaliers open the season tonight at home vs the Boston Celtics, travel to Toronto on Wednesday, travel to Minnesota on Friday, and return home to face the Charlotte Bobcats. If the Cavs are to take the next step this year they must play better vs teams such as the Celtics. Look for the Cavs to open the season 4-0.

The Lakers open defense of their title tonight in the first of 3 straight home games. The opponents in those games are the Clippers(tonight), Dallas(Friday), and Atlanta(Sunday). The Lakers could and should sweep these three games to open the season at 3-0.

The Orlando Magic open their season on Wednesday vs Philadelphia, they play at New Jersey on Friday, and at Atlanta on Sunday.The Magic are out to prove last year was no fluke, look for them to open the season 3-0.
</intro>

    <intro>
This time of year, the students are heading back to school. And somewhere, somebody is writing about "How I spent my Summer vacation".

And Shaq could say that he played some football. Some beach volleyball. A little baseball. A bit of boxing. And some swimming. But this was not some summer camp. Shaq was playing the top competition in the world. So it was no surprise that Shaq was taking on the Baltimore Bullet, Michael Phelps.

Now first a disclaimer, that I am amused when people try to relate their personal experience to the lives of professional athletes. But I will add that swimming was one of the sports I tried in high school. Only at my school, the team was nicknamed "the drowning team". I was recruited not because I had some great swimming ability, but because they needed participants so that they would not forfeit races at meets when they ran out of participants. Still, the strategy worked. We picked up some points in certain events where we were able to jump in the pool while the other team did not have enough swimmers, whereas if we (the extra swimmers) were not there, we would have tied for last, and instead finished second to last. But another thing happened. I started to shave time off of my swimming. Not enough to move out of last place in the swim meets. But the next summer I challenged my older brother who was four years older than me to a race. And I beat him for the first time at anything.

So it was interesting to see Shaq being coached. I wondered why at the end of some laps Shaq stopped and turned, rather than diving into the turn as swimmers do. In a sport where seconds count, this would have made a difference. There were several things that were set in place to create an even match, and it worked with some photo finishes. But Phelps won two out of three, and Phelps' mother was there as she always was at the Olympics.

And so this concludes the Shaq vs series on ABC. It is interesting, because at first I was wondering why I was watching it, and in the end I found that it was a guilty pleasure. And now it's time for the fall TV schedule to start. Maybe the actors of those shows will have some stories of what they did on their Summer vacation.

I wonder if any of their stories will match the one from Shaq.
</intro>

    <intro>
I am shocked that boxing would have a controversial victory.

Or maybe it's not that controversial, based on the supreme mismatch. Shaq took on Oscar de la Hoya in the 4th episode of Shaq vs. His pure mismatch in size should have made it a forgone conclusion.

This marks the first time Shaq won a challenge.

He lost in football and gave up a championship ring for a week.

He lost in beach volleyball and wore a pink speedo.

He lost in baseball and stopped putting side wagers on the event.

But he won in the ring. Perhaps you missed it, or have not been into the "Shaq vs." series. But even without Hulu, TMZ has posted a 38 second clip of the bout.

That way, you can save an hour of your life and get the best parts in half a minute.

    <intro>
The real winner, in many ways, was Albert Pujols.

The third edition of "Shaq vs." brought us Shaq in a home run derby with Pujols.

First it was football.

Then beach volleyball.

Now the self proclaimed greatest athlete of all time went to St. Louis. There were some interesting moments in the episode. If you get a chance to see it, pay close attention in the first 7 minutes to Shaq's hat when he is in the stands at St. Louis. In one scene, the St.L appears backwards. It's an interesting blooper. In the press conference, Shaq announces that his name in little league was "Shackie Robinson". Clever.

As part of the pregame activities, the two superstars went to visit Pujols' Foundation, which works with people affected by Down syndrome. And this is where Pujols showed what a champion he is off the field. RandolphC wrote another column about Pujols here. Kerri pronounces the J when she says his name. I may have a new favorite non-Red Sox.

Continuing the prep work, Shaq took a little league team out for Ice Cream, received coaching advice from John Mabry, and took a beating in the batting cage from Pujols' son AJ. The time spent with AJ and his dad added to Pujols' victory.

The home run derby started with Shag getting 10 outs to hit little league homers and Pujols getting 5 outs to hit big league blasts over 2 rounds. Shaq scored 5 in the first round, and the announcers credited his ability to go "back to back". Pujols tied it up at the end of round 1. Shaq posted another 5 in round 2. El Hombre (Pujols) scored 5 with 4 outs, then hit the winner and gave the fans a little extra. The final was 16-10. It was in the second round when the announcers called Pujols a "class act", and that was evident throughout the show. For an encore, Shaq promised to strike out Pujols. One pitch later, another homer.

So Shaq's cross training efforts are 0-3 so far. Next week: boxing. Well it can't be any worse than Kazaam.

    <intro>
Shaq vs. continued last night from sunny California.

In case you missed it, last week, Shaq was playing football in Pennsylvania. And this week, he decided to play some beach volleyball. Of course, the theme of the show is that Shaq wants to beat the best. So he played the two time gold medal winning team of Misty May Treanor and Kerri Walsh. I'm a fan of volleyball. It's one of the sports I played in High School, they added it as a boy's sport my junior year. And I am a fan of women's beach volleyball. Some guys want to pay attention to fantasy football, I save my fantasies for the women on the beach.

It could have been a modern day battle of the sexes, like Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs from 1973. Only Riggs could actually play tennis. Shaq showed what has been a criticism of his over the years. Many anti-Shaq comments say that he has his size, and that's what makes him great, and they discount his athletic ability. I suppose Shaq is trying to disprove these negative comments by cross training and competing in these other sports. This question remains: is it working?

In preparing to play the women, Shaq visited Serena Williams. The footage had me wondering, were the producers of the show at one time thinking about having Shaq play tennis? Because Shaq with a racket was less than graceful. Later, Shaq looked for redemption in a game of air hockey against Williams.

Out on the beach, Shaq teamed with olympic gold winner Todd Rogers. Later, he used a sub for Rogers, Walsh's husband Casey Jennings. Unfortunately for Shaq, he could not sub for himself, and let Jennings and Rogers play. Often during the match, I kept calling "Carry!", and this confused Kerri, who was watching with me. She thought I was calling her. Anyway, I guess there was as much chance of Shaq getting called for a carry as there is for him getting called for a travelling violation. Shaq lost the best of three match to the women, 11-6 and 11-8. The closing scenes showed Shaq running in a pink speedo.

Up next for Shaq is Cardinals superstar Albert Pujols (Kerri Corazon pronounces the J). This also proves that we learned nothing from Michael Jordan and Space Jam. I guess I will tune in anyway, somehow it hooked me the first two weeks.
